The Girl In The Alley

It was a typical Tuesday evening in heaven, surrounded by my recently passed loved ones, as live music floats around me. We are dining in style, laughing together, sharing stories about our lives before, and enjoying the moment together in the most beautiful place off earth.

I lean forward to whisper something to my grandpop across from me when suddenly, the music stops. We all look at each other, wide eyed and confused. The music only stops when we’re about to receive a new angel. I feel a hand on my shoulder, and a voice says “go!” I gather up my flowing white dress and I go.

The next thing I know, I am in an alley way in San Clemente. My mom is lying on the pavement, unconscious, and there is a bike all bent out of shape a few feet away. I know what I must do. I kneel down and see that she is bleeding. I place one hand on her head and the other on her heart. It’s still beating, but weak. I want to grab her cell phone from her purse but I cannot. I want to open it up to Harmony’s Contact and dial. But my angelic hands cannot grasp things the way humans hands do. So I have to act fast.

I swish the skirt of my dress and brush up against a young lady walking with her husband. She feels something and turns around. She spots my mama and nudges her husband to follow. He calls 911 while she grabs the phone from mom’s purse. I whisper in her ear “Harmony” over and over until the lady says out loud “I don’t know why, but we need to tell the paramedics to call Harmony”. Within 7 minutes, an ambulance shows up and paramedics work fast.

I’m watching from a distance and jump in the ambulance right as the doors are closing with my mom inside. The paramedic is making a call and I hear “hi Harmony, I have your mom and we are on our way to Mission Hospital. It looks like she fell off her bike and is in pretty bad shape. Please meet us in the ER. We will be there in 10min”.

We get to Mission Hospital, my mama still unconscious and they whisk her in, surrounded by professionals working their magic to keep her stable. While they bandage, wrap, brace, scan, and stabilize her, I am singing softly the lyrics to the last song I heard before leaving earth.

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul

Worship His holy name

Sing like never before, O my soul

I’ll worship Your holy name”

I keep my hand on my mamas shoulder the whole time. The beautiful thing about being an angel, is no one thinks to look for me. I don’t take up space, make noise, or interfere. But I am there. I am comfort. I am peace. I keep watch and I stay close.

The tests are complete, the scans are done. Bloodwork, MRI, X-rays – my mama slept through them all. As she is being wheeled back into the trauma unit, I hear “take me to my mother now!” It seems the staff in the ER entrance were being difficult and not letting Harmony in to see our mom. Thankfully Harmony wasn’t concerned what others thought of her at this moment and her determination gained her entry into the Trauma Unit long before she was even supposed to.

She walks in and takes charge. I giggle to myself as I stand back and watch, so proud of my sissy for knowing exactly what mom needs. Mom wakes up at the sound of Harmony’s voice and she starts crying while saying over and over; “I am so sorry, honey. Why are you here? Are the kids okay? What happened to me?” Harmony reassures her that she is lucky to be alive, she is in good hands, and once she is safe to go home, she will. After hearing the story from the medical team of what happened, Harmony was able to explain it to our mama, as tears rolled down both of their faces. Harmony wiped our mama’s tears away and said “Don’t cry mama, you are not alone. I got you”.

It’s only been an hour since mom’s arrival at the hospital, and while the trauma staff are waiting for the results of all the tests, they begin cleaning the gravel out of mom’s facial wounds. This process made me want to scream. It was excruciating and thankfully Harmony was there comforting our mama and singing to her and holding her hand while they were treating her face to prevent infection.

Then the results came in: fractured arm in 3 places, concussion, subarachnoid hemorrhage, several scrapes and bruising from head to toe. The results brought in a flurry of nursing staff as they began the rapid transfer to ICU to monitor the brain bleed. I linked my arm in Harmony’s and we followed the rolling bed that carried our broken mother as they transferred her to the ICU.

Realizing my job was done, and that Harmony can take care of our mama now, I planted a kiss on my mama’s forehead and swished my flowing white skirt one last time as I made my way back to my destiny.
